About Geo-Guide
Geo-Guide is a subject gateway to online information sources on Earth Sciences (including Thematic
Maps and Geography) and Mining.
The main goal is to index and catalog "high quality" internet resources in a searchable database. We are looking for online resources in the internet and selecting those which are of interest in the respective
areas for undergraduates through faculty. Each resource is described with a set of metadata based on the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set in order to make records browsable by Subject or by Source Type as well as searchable with local Search Options. New resources are continuously added to the database, already cataloged ones double-checked and updated. With that we are able to offer an up-to-date survey of relevant information sources in Earth Sciences and Mining.
Geo-Guide was developed at the Göttingen State- and University Library (SUB, Germany), a participating library under the system of literature supply supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Geo-Guide is part of the SSG-FI project funded by the DFG in 1996-2000. It was conceived as a special service of the SUB for the special subject collections Geography, Geology, Geophysics and Thematic Maps. Since 1999 the Geo-Guide has been continued in project cooperation with the University Library "Georgius Agricola" of the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology (UBF, Germany), which is participating library under the system of literature supply since 1998.
Geo-Guide is a precursor of the Virtual Library Earth Sciences, Mining and Thematic Maps (Geo-LEO). As a further project of these two libraries, this is also supported by the DFG as part of a program for developping Virtual Subject Libraries in Germany. It is conceived as a subject gateway to the libraries' special subject collections (SSG) in Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Mining and Thematic Maps as well as to the Earth Sciences collection in general. It provides subject-specific access to the libraries' catalogues and databases as well as to its printed and electronic materials. Services include online document delivery of traditional printed media and direct access to electronic documents and online databases. Geo-Guide is a participating gateway of Renardus. This service aims to provide a trusted source of selected, high quality Internet resources for those teaching, learning and researching in higher education in Europe. Renardus provides integrated search and browse access to records from individual data providers across Europe.
